Youth and Adult Programs

Private Instruction

The foundation of musical learning is private instruction. Students are matched with teachers who are best suited for their skill level and temperament.

Suzuki Violin and Suzuki Piano

Individual instruction and group classes for children 4 years of age and older
The Suzuki Talent Education approach developed by Shinichi Suzuki, a Japanese violinist and teacher, follows the same process children use to learn to speak, in which sounds must be heard before they can be imitated. Our nurturing environment provides an ideal opportunity for a child to learn and develop inner musical talents. Listening and playing skills are taught from an early age, as well as basic elements of musicianship.

Parents are necessary partners in this method of teaching, and attend all lessons. The success of this program is enhanced when parent and child work together at home on a daily basis, both listening and practicing. It is not necessary for parents to play an instrument to effectively help their children. Prospective parents are welcome to observe a lesson to help them decide whether Suzuki instruction is right for their child. Students in the Suzuki program are strongly encouraged to participate in the group class in addition to the weekly private instruction.

Introduction to Piano

Small group classes for 5 and 6 year olds
This classis designed for young beginners, giving children a good foundation for private lessons in the future. Children enrolling must have either a piano or full-sized keyboard at home.

Student Assessment

Each semester instructors complete a progress report on each student. Parents and students are encouraged to discuss their progress report and comments with the teacher.

Opportunities to perform, compete, and hear the finest professional musicians:

Recitals

Studio recitals:
An important tradition of the Music School is the “Studio recital.” Students from each instructor’s studio will perform in a recital at the end of each term to share their musical achievements with family, friends, and the Music School community. The recital experience serves to build the self-confidence of the student musician in an unpressured, supportive atmosphere.

Honors recital:
Selected students perform in the “Honors Recital” at the end of each term. Honor students are selected by their teachers based on their achievement and musical development in the past year.

Holiday and Spring Recitals:
Each semester the Music School features various impromptu events such as the Holiday and Spring Recitals, where students of all skill levels are invited to perform and invite their family and friends to attend.

Faculty Recital:
The annual Faculty Recital is held in October and is the Music School’s major scholarship fundraiser. Faculty members donate their time and talent to support this program. This event has become an annual highlight for families of the Music School to enjoy great entertainment
in an informal setting.

Student of the Month

Throughout the school year, students of the Music School are chosen as “Student of the Month.” Each month, in which the Lake Forest Symphony hosts a featured artist, the student selected will have his/her biography and picture appear in the Concert program and is invited to attend a Symphony concert with his/her parents free of charge.
