School Policies
Admission and Registration
Registration for new students begins with an interview with the Director of the Music School. The purpose of the interview is to familiarize the students and the parents with the offerings and policies of the Music School and to identify the interests and needs of the students in order to recommend the most appropriate teacher(s) and/or program(s). Registration will not be deemed complete unless the first tuition payment and registration form(s) have been submitted and approved.
Students are required to enroll for a complete 17-week semester (7-week summer session) beginning with the date the term commences. If a new student enrolls after the term has begun, tuition will be pro-rated for the remainder of the semester. Returning students receive priority in lesson scheduling.
Trial Lesson
The Music School offers a 15-minute trial lesson/consultation free of charge to students interested in musical instruction. A trial lesson might be necessary to determine whether a student is ready for private instruction or simply used as an opportunity to meet with an instructor prior to registration. A trial lesson may be arranged by contacting the Music School’s Administrative Director, Christa Griffith.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend all lessons and classes for which they are registered. Notification of a lesson cancellation by the student is a courtesy to the teacher but does not excuse payment for the contracted lessons. An excused absence may be rescheduled at the teacher’s discretion. To be eligible for an excused absence, notification of a cancellation must be given at least 24 hours in advance. Students are entitled to only one make-up lesson per semester due to an excused absence. Unexcused absences will not be made up. If, however, the teacher cancels a lesson for any reason, the lesson will be made up or a refund will be made. The Director will consider exceptions for serious illness, injury, or the like.
Severe Weather Closings
In the event of severe weather conditions, the Music School will follow the public school closings of Lake Forest. Closing information will be provided to WBBM and WGN-AM radio stations. If the school closes, lessons missed will automatically be scheduled during the make-up week.
Withdrawal
The schedule for refunds is as follows:
End of first week - prorated minus
$50 deposit
End of third week - 50% of remaining balance minus $50 deposit
After the fourth week - no refund
Withdrawal requires a written notice to the Music School and approval by the Director. The Director will consider exceptions for serious illness, injury, or the relocation of the family.
The Music School reserves the right to cancel any class, workshop or ensemble, with full refund, if enrollment is insufficient. Notification of cancellation will be made by telephone and will occur prior to the beginning of the term.
